The Italian Pig Breeding Show takes place in the area with the highest concentration of large breeding farms and processing industries. Cremona is right at the heart of the major European agro-livestock system producing 80% of Italian pig meat.
The pig breeding sector has been registering positive results over the last months: quotations are rising and slaughter pig prices have increased significantly after the very difficult situation of 2015. Even if it is rather premature to talk about a definitive recovery, Italian pig farming shows positive signs. According to Ismea figures, the EU market confirms this positive trend: production will increase by 5.2% in the next 10 years and consumption will register a 8.6% growth. The EU exports of pig meat products have reached the record value of 2.4 million tons in the first seven months of 2016, that is 4.4 billion euros value and a 36.7% volume increase in comparison to 2015. In Italy, the agricultural stage of the sector is worth 3 billion euros while the cured meat industry has a turnover of 8 billions.
